Why YOU Should Recycle...

What YOU Should Recycle...

SERVPRO of Tracy has some insight on recycling waste.

USA Waste

  1. Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic beverage bottles every hour.
  2. The United States of America is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world's people generate 40% of the world's waste.
  3. Americans toss out enough aluminum every 3 months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet.
  4. The average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made from trees. This amounts to about 2 billion trees per year.
  5. Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper.
  6. Manufacturers produce more than 15 million tons of expanded polystyrene (aka, StyrofoamTM) each year, but we recycle less than 1% of it.
  7. According to the EPA, yard trimmings and food residuals together constitute 24% of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream.
  8. The US population discards each year 16 billion diapers, 1.6 billion pens, 2 billion razor blades, and 220 million car tires each year.

Recycling & Energy

  1. Recycling aluminum requires 95% less energy than making aluminum from raw materials, and produces 95% less air pollution and 97% less water pollution.
  2. Only 10% of the 140.3 million cell phones retired in 2007 were recycled. If we recycled all of the cell phones retired each year, we would save enough energy to power 18,500 homes for a year.
  3. Recycling one million laptops saves enough energy to power 3,657 American homes in a year.
  4. Recycling paper takes 60% less energy than making paper form raw materials.
  5. Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.
  6. Recycling plastic takes 88% less energy than making plastic from raw materials.
  7. Over a ton of natural resources are conserved for every ton of glass recycled, including 1,300 pounds of sand, 410 pounds of soda ash, 380 pounds of limestone, and 160 pounds of feldspar. Source: Keep America Beautiful.
  8. The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.

What To Do During a Power Outage?

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

Are you Prepared for a Power Outage at Home or at Work?

To prevent revenue loss during a power outage due to weather or small critters, follow these steps.

SERVPRO of Tracy has some tips for your safety during a power outage, it’s important to have a plan of action.

  1. Make sure your employees can locate the meter and electric service room.
  2. Make sure there are emergency lights in the meter room.
  3. Have flashlights available.
  4. Turn everything off.
  5. Use your cell phone to find out if the outage is limited to your building or if other locations in your area are affected.
  6. When electricity is restored, only turn on essential equipment. Then slowly start turning stuff back on after 20-30 mins.

SERVPRO of Tracy says to consider investing in backup generators. This can give your commercial property temporary power until the electric company gets it back up and running.

Tips to Avoid Cigarette Fires at Home

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Fire safety is one of the most important way we can protect our family at home. When disaster strikes, SERVPRO of Tracy is here for you.

5 Tips For Preventing Home Cigarette Fires

An estimated 5% of reported home fires were started by smoking materials.

Smoking poses a threat to your home when you have improper habits. Following these five guidelines will protect you from any potential cigarette fire.

1. Use an Appropriate Container

An ashtray with a wide base or bucket full of sand should be around in areas where you typically smoke. When using an ashtray, it should be stable on a surface to prevent accidental knockdowns. Keeping it stable prevents it from spilling and starting an ashtray fire from a still smoldering cigarette.

If possible, the container should also be kept away from any building to add distance between the flame remnant and all flammable structures.

2. Completely Put Out Cigarettes

When you are finished smoking, it’s advised to add water to the ashes and cigarette butt to completely remove the fire and it's risks. If you ever have to  step away or need to stop smoking, you should put out your cigarette to avoid leaving a lit one unattended.

3. Smoke Only When Fully Awake

If you are taking medicine that makes you drowsy or are sleep deprived, it is best to avoid smoking. If you pass out while smoking, you will likely drop your cigarette. Since you are asleep, you will also have a harder time escaping or stopping any growing cigarette fire. Smoking while sleepy puts your home at risk.

4. Only Smoke Outside Your Home

There is a sizable difference in the number of flammable objects when comparing a typical indoor and outdoor environment. Your furniture, curtains, trash bin, mattress and bedding can all be ignited by a loose cigarette. It is much safer to smoke outside and remain there until you are finished.

5. Avoid Smoking Around Oxygen Tanks

Oxygen is very sensitive to fire. Lit cigarettes should be kept away from anyone using medical oxygen or places where it’s stored.

As always, if disaster strikes, SERVPRO of Tracy is always here for you. Call us 24/7/365 days a year at 209-834-0200.

Safety During Holidays

12/16/2020 (Permalink)

We here at SERVPRO of Tracy, have Holiday Fire Safety Tips. Put a Freeze on Holiday Fires!

The holidays are a time when we put aside practicality to indulge tradition and  fantasy. We hang many lights from the rooftops and all around the house and bring live trees into our living rooms. We all need to take a break from the normal routine we are in day in and day, but the magic of the holidays can be ruined so quickly by a serious injury or carelessly placed candle.

SERVPRO of Tracy has some holiday tips that will keep you safe to enjoy the holiday season with family and friends!

Make sure to check the wiring on your Christmas lights. If the wires are frayed, replace them, even if they still work. The cost of new lights is minimal compared to the cost of fire damage restoration.

Next, SERVPRO encourages you to keep an eye on the weather while traveling.  If freezing temps are on their way while you will be out of town, make sure to wrap pipes, cover plants and take cold weather precautions just in case!

Also, candles are one of the top causes of holiday fire damage. You could possibly use battery-operated lights instead of candles to lower your risk of a accidental fire. If candles are needed for your holiday traditions, or are just too hard to part with, be careful not to place them too close to flammable curtains, greeting cards, or your Christmas tree.

SERVPRO of Tracy wants you to enjoy the holiday season with as much safety as possible!
