The following are some tips for individuals to consider when putting up and maintaining their holiday decorations this December, like you see in this picture:

  1. Do not overload power outlets with holiday lights. Pay close attention to the
manufacturer's instructions on the number of lights you can string together.
  2. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles.
  3. Be careful not to splatter wax when extinguishing a candle.
  4. Use flashlights instead of candles for emergency lighting.
  5. Do not purchase a Christmas tree that is dry or dropping needles excessively.
Be sure to water your Christmas tree regularly.
  6. Do not use strings of lights that are worn, frayed, manually spliced, or broken.
  7. If you purchase an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled fire-retardant.
  8. Do not link more than three light strands unless the directions indicate it is safe.
Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Be sure to periodically check the wires; they should not be warm to the touch.

Damaged by Thunderstorm?

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

What is a Thunderstorm Damage?

Thunderstorm is also known as an electrical storm or a lightning storm. Thunderstorms form when air cools as it rises, and water vapor condenses and forms cumulus clouds and condensation occurs, heat energy is released and helps the thunderstorm grow.

Two of the most important ingredients for thunderstorm formation are instability, unstable air and moisture.

Every thunderstorm is dangerous despite their small size. SERVPRO of Tracy professionals know how dangerous and the damages a thunderstorm can cause, and have helped several homeowners with repairs, from the strong wind, hail and tornadoes. While thunderstorm won’t hurt you, lightning will.

So it’s important to pay attention when you hear thunder. Thunderstorms can happen anywhere and every thunderstorm has lightning, the lightning can strike people and is very dangerous.

What Exactly is a Thunderstorm?

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Tracy would like to share with our clients about a thunderstorm topic?

  • Many people would say hurricanes and tornadoes are much for dangerous than a thunderstorm. Unfortunately what they say isn't true.
  • Under the right conditions, rainfall from thunderstorms can cause flash flooding which kills more people each year than hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning.
  • What exactly is a thunderstorm? A thunderstorm is a normal rain shower with the addition of thunder, and since thunder comes from lightning, all thunderstorms have lightning. Thunderstorms have caused millions of dollars in damages just with the basics like rain and lighting.
  • Thunderstorms have caused power outages that have lasted weeks at a time.
  • Here at SERVPRO of Tracy we take these matters very seriously and always have a protective eye on such storm moving in on our community. For any damages related to thunderstorms please contact SERVPRO of Tracy for their expert opinion at 209-834-0200

Hot Summer and Fireworks?

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

We all look forward to summer vacations, family reunions, camping. Plus, Labor Day is approaching next week. However it also brings fires and injuries due to fireworks and outdoor cooking.

We here at SERVPRO of Tracy, want our community to know that the best way to protect their families is to not use fireworks at home. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends attending public displays and leaving the lighting of fireworks to the professionals.

During the summer months, house fires are less common but can still be a hazard. Your home is supposed to be a place where you and your family can feel safe and secure. However, there are some seasonal dangers that can catch you off guard if you don't remain vigilant. The two biggest being cooking/ grilling and fireworks during the summer holidays.

We here at SERVPRO have personally seen how fast danger can occur during fun times with family members.

Please take care of yourself and family members. enjoy your Labor Day weekend from your friendly neighborhood SERVPRO of Tracy 209-834-0200

Back to School? How to Reopen Schools......

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

The pressure to bring students back to classrooms is intense, but the calculus is tricky with infections still out of control in many communities.

  • As school districts across the United States consider whether and how to restart in-person classes, their challenge is complicated by a pair of fundamental uncertainties: No nation has tried to send children back to school with the virus raging at levels like America’s, and the scientific research about transmission in classrooms is limited.
  • The World Health Organization has now concluded that the Coronavirus is airborne in crowded, indoor spaces with poor ventilation, a description that fits many American schools.
  • But there is enormous pressure to bring students back — from parents, from pediatricians and child development specialists.
  • Some research suggests younger children are less likely to infect other people than teenagers are, which would make opening elementary schools less risky than high schools, but the evidence is not conclusive.

The risk of reopening will depend on how well schools contain transmission, with masks and limited occupancy. Only the time will tell.....

September is National Preparedness Month

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

We, at SERVPRO of Tracy, would like to let you know about different types of disasters and emergencies happen in communities across the country. But, there are key steps that every household can take to be better prepared for them. If you do nothing else this month, take time to create a disaster plan including an emergency escape plan.

  1. Make a clear plan of what to do in an emergency and in case of an evacuation.
  2. Identify clear roles for everyone in the house.
  3. Discuss how to prepare and respond to emergencies that can happen at home, work and school.
  4. Make a list of all the important things you may forget when in an emergency.
  5. Have a disaster kit assembled for everyone in the house.
  6. Have an out of the area emergency contact person saved on a smartphone.
  7. Practice evacuating your home twice a year, especially if you have kids or pets. This makes it a routine and can make a real emergency situation less stressful.

According to the Red Cross there are many disaster apps now available for smartphones and tablets that can be downloaded to help with emergencies. Some of these apps include a full emergency app, tornado, hurricane, earthquake, wildfire and flood apps. If any of these disasters are common in your areas I would recommend downloading the corresponding app. With these apps you can know when to evacuate, where a shelter may be located, and exactly where the disaster occurred.

Any questions please call SERVPRO of Tracy on 209-834-0200

How to stop a Toilet Overflow?

7/26/2019 (Permalink)

No Disaster is small or big for SERVPRO of Tracy Professionals. Call on 209-834-0200 today

What to do When a Toilet Overflows in Your Home or Business..

Toilet overflows are a common problem that affect many homes and businesses throughout the year and often result in sewer damage. It can be useful to know how to react to a toilet overflow before one occurs in your home.

1. Turn Off and Remove the Water

To prevent water from spreading in your bathroom and to other areas of your home, it's often wise to turn off the toilet's water supply. Generally, the sooner you can turn off the water supply, the less damage that will occur. Once the water has been turned off, it's normally best to remove any standing water by using mops or towels. Quickly removing water will make it easier to fix the issue with the toilet and can help to prevent mold growth.

2. Unclog the Toilet

After you have taken steps to prevent sewer damage by turning off the water and drying the floor and area surrounding your toilet, you can shift your focus to unclogging the toilet. You can normally fix a clogged toilet with a plunger, but if your plunger isn’t fixing the problem, you may want to consider using an auger. Generally, your toilet should work normally after it has been unclogged.

3. Know When to Call in SERVPRO of Tracy Professionals

If you are unable to unclog your toilet on your own, if your flooded toilet has caused major water damage or if your toilet commonly overflows, it may be necessary to contact a sewage company that can help to fix the issue. Additionally, it can be helpful to contact water damage restoration specialists if you suspect that major damage has occurred or if there has been standing water in your home for several days.

Knowing how to react to common problems in the home and businesses such as toilet overflows, is useful for every homeowner. Turning off and removing water, unclogging the toilet if you are able and calling professionals when necessary can help you manage the issue and prevent sewer damage.

Call SERVPRO of Tracy Professionals on 209-834-0200 for your needs.

Best Insurance for Storm Damage

1/2/2019 (Permalink)

There Are Many Things To Consider When Purchasing Insurance For Your Home...

Purchasing Insurance Needs to be an Educated Decision

When purchasing homeowners insurance, there are many factors to consider, especially what would happen in the case that you experience storm damage. If you live in an area that is prone to severe storms, it is even more important to understand the kind of insurance policy you have, the limitations of it, what it covers and the kinds of storms for which you might not be covered.

Overview of Storm Damage Insurance

A lot of  homeowners have experienced a bad hailstorm already or seen the storm damage which hail can cause to automobiles, homes, businesses and other property. When hail hits, it does the most damage to the outside of your property or home. Types of damage that are commonly caused by hail include siding damage, roof damage, window damage, shingle damage and automobile damage.

Thunderstorms

Most homeowners standard policies, known as HO-3 policies, will cover your home and its contents. Usually you are covered against theft, storm damage, some major disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes and hail, plus pet damage.

Floods and earthquakes are not usually covered under a majority of standard insurance policies and need a separate policy. Home insurance policies, remember, don’t cover normal wear and tear or poor maintenance, so you should ensure that your home is properly maintained at all times.

Shopping for Homeowners Insurance

When you are in the market for a homeowner’s policy, it is a good idea to look at several different companies first. Different companies for insurance will offer a significant range of coverage levels, prices, and discounts. Don’t just shop the ones you know best, but look for the policy which works for your situation the best. If you find a policy which looks good but is offered by a company you don’t know, it is helpful to look into their background.

When choosing a policy, begin by researching the area you live in. You will want to have a firm knowledge of the history of storm damage in your neighborhood related to:

  • Tornadoes
  • Hailstorms
  • Flooding
  • Wind storms
  • Natural disasters
  • Earthquakes

Ensure that the insurance policy you select will cover adequately the natural disasters and storms in your area. Look out for insurance companies that are known for denying claims unfairly. Each year, the American Justice Association publishes a list of the ten worst companies. If your insurance company is found on this list and your claim for insurance has been denied, ensure you connect with a contract that is reputable, such as SERVPRO of Tracy, who has the experience to be able to fight for what you deserve.

If you do experience storm damage of any kind, make sure to contact our professional technicians at SERVPRO of Tracy by calling 209-834-0200 right away so we can assess your damages and make sure that you get the compensation you deserve.

Storm/Flood Tips

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

We, at SERVPRO of Tracy knows how to handle storm or flood - should you ever have to go through this process.

There is always potential for flood damage no matter where you live. According to the American Red Cross floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers these flood safety tips:

  1. Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  2. If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and water is riding rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  3. Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood occurs and affects you, call SERVPRO of Tracy Even minor floods have potential to cause major damage. We are faster to ANY size disaster. Let us help you get your life back in order.

3 Tips on Landscaping to Prevent Home Flooding

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Three Ways Landscaping Can Be Used To Prevent Home Flooding:

Flooding can be one of the costliest forms of damage that can happen to your home. While a homeowner can work to prevent other forms of water damage with regular maintenance and inspection of plumbing and HVAC systems, outside flooding, which can be just as costly as internal damage, can be prevented in other ways. Here are three types of landscaping that can help prevent this type of flooding.

1. Artificial Means of Drainage

There are two different ways that a homeowner can use constructed means to drain excess water. One option is diverted rain spouts. These useful instruments divert the excess from outside flooding away from walls and down inclines. Secondly, a homeowner can use a specially constructed driveway to allow for greater rain drainage. Both options can also add little aesthetic touches to a home.

2. Low-Maintenance Options

If a homeowner is on a budget in terms of time, there are other great options to explore. Heavy mulch in the flower beds around the home can absorb a great deal of excess water. Another possibility is adding swales around the property. Swales are depressions that are usually found around the borders. After a heavy rain storm, the water should drain into the depression rather than stagnating on top of the grass.

3. Beautiful Long-Term Additions

If a homeowner has a green thumb or is willing to invest more for long-term additions, these options may be of interest. Adding on a green roof – what is essentially a lawn on top of the home – can help soak up the excess water after heavy rain. On top of this, it can be a beautiful feature. Another option is creating a rain garden out of native plant life. By placing the “thirstiest” plants in the middle of a declined space, the water has an easier time filtering into the soil.

All of these options are great ways a homeowner can work from the outside to prevent water damage. However, it’s always a good idea to seek out professional help at SERVPRO of Tracy, if more information is needed about how to prevent damage due to outside flooding.

Be Storm Ready for a Big Strom..

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time and anywhere day or night. Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 2 land falling deadly hurricans
  • 1,000 tornadoes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather-related, leading to around 500 deaths per year and nearly $15 Billion in damages.

Here are a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

  • Know Your Risk - The first step is to understand the types of weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly,  obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.
  • Take Action - Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a plan for your home or business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.
  • Be an Example. Once you  have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

Flood Damage in Manteca Homes

1/3/2018 (Permalink)

Manteca Flood Waters Are Removed by SERVPRO

Manteca Property Owners Rely on SERVPRO for Storm Damage Mitigation

Homes in Manteca are vulnerable to water issues from many sources. Leaky pipes can ruin a sink cabinet or force replacing drywall in the garage, but it is still acts of nature that can shock a homeowner and result in thousands of dollars in restoration costs.

As close as we are to Old River, Manteca flood damage is not a rare occurrence. Residents sometimes forget because of the droughts that strike California on a regular basis. Since the last one ended, rains this year reminded everyone what can happen. SERVPRO is here to help remove floodwater and return houses, condos, and apartments to their original condition.

We have to start with getting the water out of the home. If the area is still underwater, then we may have to drop sandbags in place to prevent water from re-entering the home as we bring in commercial pumps to draw out the water. The pumps remove most of it and doing this also provides a safe environment for our IICRC certified technicians to operate in while the water outside continues to recede. The amount of time depends on the conditions around the property.

Now that we can move safely, the restoration crew removes everything off the floor. It prevents paint and varnish from leeching off furniture and into the water where it can stain carpets and wood floors. As we do this, SERVPRO inspectors examine the property to determine what is restorable and what we suggest should be discarded.

With the standing water and furniture removed, we bring in extraction wands and riding Rovers. These devices draw out water trapped in floorboards and carpets. Our technicians can adjust the level of vacuum and speed of airflow to remove moisture quickly without causing further damage. It prevents wood floors from drying too quickly, which can result in warping or cracking.

With the water removed, we lift the edges around the carpets to dry them. In most homes, this means removing the pad under the carpet. They deteriorate quickly after exposure to water and are very cheap to replace compared to attempting to dry them. After we remove the pad, we dry the floor using air movers to force warm air over the surface. Next, we replace the pad and lay the carpet back down. If there is any moisture in the carpet, we direct air movers under and over the surface to dry it before reattaching it. One caveat with the above service is the nature of the floodwaters. If contaminated with sewage or known chemicals, then replacing these items are in order.

These actions are only the start of what SERVPRO of Tracy does to alleviate and remove the effects of flooding in your home. To schedule a service visit, call us today at (209) 834-0200. We are here for you.

Getting Items to High Places Before Lathrop Flood Damage Can Hit

10/2/2017 (Permalink)

Protect Your Possessions in Lathrop by Storing Above the Flood Line--SERVPRO Tip

Minimize Flood Damage by Temporary High Storage--SERVPRO Says

If you suspect a flood is incoming, and you still have time to prepare, there are steps you can do to keep your valuables safe. The most important factor to consider when saving items from flood damage in Lathrop is elevation: the higher above the ground something is, the less likely it is to be damaged by floodwaters. You probably don't have time to move everything upstairs, or may not have an upper floor, so try to take advantage of these potential storage spots for ground-level items.

Countertops and Tables
While countertops and tables are perhaps the most obvious places to protect belongings from flood damage in your Lathrop home, it is important to utilize this space most effectively. Use every inch of countertop and table space you can by layering items on top of one another and attempting to reduce space between items as much as possible. SERVPRO suggest to not just throw things into a pile - this takes up extra space and makes SERVPRO's item inventory process more difficult.

Overhead Cabinets
While most homes have substantial overhead cabinet space, this often goes unused due to the presence of dishes and other items already there. However, in the heat of the moment, many fail to consider what exactly is stored up there. Are those items at serious risk of damage from the flood in the first place? Would space they occupy be better spent on something more fragile and valuable? Keep these questions in mind as you check through overhead and wall cabinet space.

Upstairs and Attic Spaces
If your home has a second floor or an attic, try to get large items up there first. Furniture and large electronics may have no other place to go, so be careful not to fill upstairs space with small items first. Plus, larger objects can often hold other, smaller items on top of them once they are safely relocated.

When flooding hits the local area, SERVPRO of Tracy is at the ready to respond to calls for help. If your home has been or is about to be damaged by a flood, call us at (209) 834-0200 so that we can respond as fast as possible.
